Born May 4, 1925 in Mie Prefecture, Okuyama Taigan (Okuyama Yōji) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Ōyabu Shūrei and Miyazaki Tairei. He started teaching in 1969 and belonged to the Tamagawa-sha Daitomo-kai.
